CollapseFour healthcare AI studies this week: AI-guided lung biopsy cuts pneumothorax, while an FDA-cleared PE tool underperforms in the real world
Healthcare AI account HealthAINav summarized four studies from this week. A multicenter randomized trial found AI-assisted navigation for lung biopsies meant fewer needle punctures (2.0 vs 2.5) and fewer pneumothoraces (12.7% vs 23.9%), though better diagnostic accuracy has not been shown. A real-world evaluation across 17 facilities found an FDA-cleared pulmonary embolism AI reached 86.8% sensitivity on dedicated scans and 73.5% for incidental PE, both below its clearance-study figures. In a reader study, trainees accepted 52% of incorrect AI suggestions on neonatal radiographs, and in a depression-relapse study, adding brain imaging, genetics and other biomarkers did not beat a model using a few clinical risk factors (best balanced accuracy 64.4%). The post does not link the individual studies.
